Eve of Justice

On March 4th, the eve before the oral arguments before the CA Supreme Court to repeal prop 8, communities across the country convened together to hold vigils in support of a repeal. We had an amazing event in Los Angeles made all the more amazing because of the grassroots unity and cooperation behind it. Religious leaders like Father Geoff Farrow, civic leaders like Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, musicians like Mandy Steckleberg, entertainers like Alec Mapa, activists like Rick Jacobs, and over a thousand everyday activists like you and me all converged on Olvera Street last night to show solidarity in the struggle to repeal prop 8.

The night was highlighted by a re-commitment ceremony presided over by Villaraigosa (where Melissa and I got re-committed), real stories from unmarried couples who would like their rights back, and a candlelit march led by drums to the building where the state supreme court meets. We also got the chance to hear a legal update from Lamda Legal’s Jenny Pizer before she jetted off to join the rest of the legal team in San Francisco.

All-in-all it was a successful night that brought the community together here, and the 34 other cities where Eve of Justice events were held, to pledge to continue the fight no matter what the court rules.
